​Monica teaches at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. Prior to joining the faculty at Whitman, Monica served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Bucknell University and William & Mary.

​She received her Ph.D. in Italian from the University of California, Los Angeles. While at UCLA, Monica worked as a Dissertation Year Fellow, Teaching Associate, and Graduate Research Mentorship Fellow. She also served as a Co-Editor–in–Chief of Carte Italiane, and as the President of the Humanities Council of UCLA's Graduate Student Association.

Monica earned the degrees of C.Phil. and M.A. in Italian Literature from UCLA. She is an alumna of Scripps College in Claremont, CA, where she graduated with a B.A. magna cum laude in European Studies and a Minor in Foreign Languages (Italian and French).

Research

Monica's research focuses on modern and contemporary Italian theater and literature, with specific attention to the intersections of politics and cultural production, intermediality, and gender studies. Her scholarship also addresses the history of Italian drama, particularly of the Renaissance and Baroque eras.

Her publications have appeared in journals such as The Italianist, California Italian Studies, The Modern Language Review, Annali d'Italianistica, and Italica. Her current book projects tracks theater and performance as forms of feminist political engagement in twentieth century Italy.


Teaching 

Monica teaches diverse classes in Italian Studies, ranging from cinema, literature, and culture, to all levels of Italian language. A selection of her courses from Bucknell and William & Mary include:
  • "Introduction to Italian Studies, 1300–present" provides a broad overview of Italian history, literature and culture. It is the first upper-division seminar for Italian majors at Bucknell.
  • "Italian Political Cinema" investigates how Italian filmmakers of the 20th century engage with their nation's history and political movements, from the advent of Fascism to the labor and student movements of the 1970s. 
  • "Women Writers and Feminism in 20th Century Italy" is a seminar designed in collaboration with the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies Department. It traces the intersections of artists and writers with feminist movements in Italy from 1860 to the present. ​
